高齢ドライバーによる事故が相次いでいる。ここ3週間だけでも、報道によると計5人がはねられて死亡した。

横浜市で10月28日、集団登校していた小学生の列に軽トラックが突っ込み、1年生の男児が死亡した。逮捕された男（87）は「どこを走ったか覚えていない」と話した。事故前日から車で徘徊していたとみられる。
11月10日には84歳が、12日には83歳が、13日には82歳が、いずれも死亡事故を起こしている（＝年齢はすべて事故当時）。
こうした事故を受け、政府は対策を検討。来年3月からは、75歳以上の免許更新時の認知機能検査で医師の診断を義務づける。警察庁は運転免許の返納を促しているが、2015年に自主返納した65歳以上は27万人で、前年末の免許保有者の2.5%だ。
